SAN DIEGO, CA—Adventures begin in The Backyard, a brand-new exhibition at the San Diego Natural History Museum (The Nat) that allows little learners to expand their horizons, learn, and explore the natural world through play. This new space provides children 0-5 years old with a safe, dedicated place to play while parents, grandparents, and caregivers participate or sit, relax, and observe. The exhibition is included with paid admission and free for members. All children must be accompanied by an adult to gain access to the space.

This past summer, San Diego Natural History Museum scientists working in Baja California resurrected a species from the ashes of extinction, and are now working with local agencies on a conservation plan. The discovery did not require Jurassic Park technology, just good old-fashioned research and perseverance. The San Quintin kangaroo rat (Dipodomys gravipes) was held as an example of a modern extinction due to agricultural conversion in the San Quintín area of Baja California (Mexico). The animal had not been seen since 1986 until this past July when Mammalogist Scott Tremor and Research Associate Sula Vanderplank observed it.

The San Diego Natural History Museum (The Nat) is providing leadership on regional biodiversity and conservation by hosting a trio of science-based events this spring: the State of Biodiversity Symposium and Nat Talk, the City Nature Challenge 2018: San Diego, and the 10th anniversary Balboa Park BioBlitz. Combined, these three initiatives will convene conservation practitioners and educate the public on the biodiversity of San Diego County and the Baja California Peninsula.
